Real-Time Feedback Tools for Archers
What if you could know exactly what went wrong before the arrow even lands? Instant Insight is dedicated to shortening the feedback loop for archers, allowing them to make corrections in real time. Mistakes can compound when feedback is delayed. A high shoulder, poor alignment, or misaligned stance often goes unnoticed until the arrow hits the target—or worse, misses entirely. By transforming every shot into an opportunity for immediate learning, we’re redefining how archers grow and improve. Instant Insight ensures archers can adjust and refine their technique with unparalleled efficiency.
How It Could Work
Instant Insight is not a single project but a range of projects with a similar aim, to provide feedback to archers
Foldable mirror
A lot of clubs and archers struggle for storage space and this stops them having a full size mirror for feedback. A folding mirror that can be transported in a car and brought into a range for a single session will provide basic but vital feedback for archers.
VR
Many archers use video delay feedback to see where they are positioned through the shot but this feed back is delayed and 2 dimensional. Using a 3D camera and VR goggles archers can watch themselves move into position as if they were their own coach.
Release Motion Sensor Grid
There is an excellent drill for release motion which sees archers stand next to a wall and make their shot without letting their elbow come backwards. To replicate this on the shooting line we use a hollow square with IR break-beam sensors to see whether the elbow moved backwards during the shot and provide audible feedback to the archer.
Bow Cant-o-meter
A study by the University of Waseda showed a 38% decrease in bow tilt after just two sessions of using an audible feedback device that let the archer know, in real time, whether or not they were canting the bow. Using an open source accelerometer we can replicate this device.
Front shoulder movement detector
The front shoulder lifting while raising or drawing the bow is a common problem that archers struggle to notice. This simple device rests on the front shoulder and provides audible feedback when it is raised.
Band trainer accessory
Despite the cool gadgets band training is still going to be necessary, lots of it. The issue is that the band doesn’t well replicate the bow grip hand position and with a lot of practice can hurt the back of your wrist. Overcoming these problems is a 3D printed bowgrip with a slot for the band and protection for your wrist.
Video Coaching Templates
Reviewing technique progress over time can be difficult. Archery GB have produced a list of “standard” camera angles that coaches can use to get repeatable shots each time so that a reasonable side-by-side comparison can be conducted. We can help out by providing the same angles of elite archers and tools to help coaches analyse these “standard” angles.
Why It Matters
Instant Insight is more than a training tool—it’s a game-changer. By bridging the gap between action and understanding, this project:
- Accelerates Learning: Real-time feedback eliminates guesswork, enabling faster skill development.
- Boosts Confidence: Immediate corrections prevent frustration and keep archers focused on improvement.
- Refines Technique: Detailed, moment-by-moment insights allow archers to hone every aspect of their performance.
Imagine an archer confidently adjusting their stance, grip, or release with every shot, building muscle memory for success in record time. Instant Insight doesn’t just help archers improve—it empowers them to understand and master their craft.
